Geoclips
Geoclips are text, audio and video clips designed to capture the highest quality knowledge about a specific location by those who know a location best on a given topic. For example:
  • Park rangers from the National Park Service
  • Artists, Musicians, Comedians
  • Professional or amatuer historians
  • Architects, ...
Geoclips capture the concept of timeless, category specific knowledge by capturing multiple topics and perspectives for a single location and packaging them into short multimedia clips (typically just 2-5 minutes).
The Challenge of "Knowing Anywhere"
As you can imagine, people sharing their knowledge about every location in the world will have its challenges. And we do mean everywhere: from historic buildings and famous residences, to small-town pubs and remote covered bridges, to National Parks with geological formations and woodland trails....
  • Information quality: How to filter-out submissions of minimal interests - e.g. audio descriptions of people's closets.
  • Information overload: Because locations are infinite and each one can have hundreds of topics and perspective.
  • Information relevancy: Everyone must be able to quickly find the topics that interest them most.
The key to Pocket Journey's success will be addressing each of these challenges so we are working with the community members to determine the best solutions.
Location-aware information
We refer to this as the challenge of analyzing and discovering user-relevant location-aware information. Pocket Journey is being built from the ground-up to address these challenge and more through a combination of intuitive user interfaces, mobile and web-based user communities, and advanced information analytic algorithms. If you are interested, then please join us in this effort or you can post your thoughts/comments to the Pocket Journey blog.
Wikipedia
Wikipedia is by far the most widely used and best developed source of geoclips around.
Freebase is a rapidly growing database of all the world's knowledge but a significant effort has been taken around geoclip-style content as well.
???
If you know of other geoclip repositories with which Pocket Journey should form a relationship, then please help us add to this soon-to-explode list.
